Nearly two hundred years later it's questionable whether the British Lord Chancellor who 'discovered' the town during his quarantine there did it any favours. Once a humble 10th century fishing village sliding down the slopes of the surrounding hills to cluster around a little stone harbour Cannes has become just another 'playville' for the grossly rich and famous who revel in the association with their Italianate cultural heroes Gucci, Maserati, the Glitterati and the Paparazzi. It's a brave tourist who chooses Cannes' famous promenade to expose their pallid limbs to the first summer sun especially if it coincides with the Film Festival in May when the glamour quotient of the town is tripled by an influx of publicity seeking actors, movie toting producers and eager young wannabes promoting their attributes on the beach. Film buffs might be able to squeeze their zoom lens between the cameras of the world's media to get a shot of the side of Kristen Scott Thomas's head or Bruce Willis's baseball cap or even get lucky and snap one of the stars sneaking a sly cappuccino at the Cafe Roma. If people watching isn't your thing then you're in the wrong town. In fact you're in the wrong country. If you've got money then you're probably here to be seen or to find out what everyone else is up to. If like the majority of us, the closest you get to high fashion is a pair of genuine timberland boots then you can spend your day watching how the other half live, drooling over the sports cars and leaving grubby nose prints on the enticing plate glass windows of all those designer boutiques. Happily there is a place in Cannes where you can combine all these activities into one, the Boulevard de la Croisette. La Croisette is Cannes' main drag. It hugs the shoreline from the old port in the west to the new harbour, flooded with all manner of exotic luxury yachts, 3km further east. During the festival much of the action and the star spotting goes on along the boulevard between the ranks of plush hotels, casinos, expensive fashion stores and eateries and the private, body strewn beaches where the sand is almost obliterated by the ranks of parasols. La Croisette is the very essence of Cannes and if you do nothing else while you're here a stroll along this world famous promenade is a must, otherwise, what are you doing here? As for retail therapy, unless your credit card is made of very precious metal, you'd best stick to window shopping. However follow one of the side streets away from the beach and you'll find more reasonably priced shops on the Rue d'Antibes or the pedestrianised Rue Meynadier and despite its movie star lifestyle Cannes still has its traditional French market. The Forville Market Marche Forville near the old town specialises in fruit, vegetables, seafood and other Provencal goodies. The market is open daily from 6am to 1pm and on Mondays it transforms seamlessly into a Flea Market Marche Brocante .
